Improving the steamcrackers production efficiency
Hydrocarbons exposed to elevated temperatures form coke, which can cause metal carburization and affect heat transfer and flow dynamics. In less than 15 minutes, enough coke is formed to require PDH and BDH unit shutdown and immediate cleaning and decoking. DMDS Evolution® E2 is the leading sulfur-based, coke suppression and metallurgy protection technology.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does DMDS stand for?
DMDS stands for dimethyl disulfide, a sulfur-rich molecule used as a sulfiding agent in refining and petrochemical processes. Arkema’s high-purity DMDS solutions are specifically designed to ensure optimal performance in catalyst activation and coking control applications.
What are the hazards of DMDS?
For detailed information regarding the potential hazards and safe handling of Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS), please refer to the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
With Carelflex® service, refineries benefit from Arkema’s unmatched track record in DMDS injection, ensuring unmatched reliability and peace of mind. Every step of the injection process is expertly managed to guarantee consistent, safe, and trouble-free on-site operations.
What is the difference between DMDS and DMS?
DMDS (dimethyl disulfide) and DMS (dimethyl sulfide) differ in their chemical structure, properties, and industrial uses. While DMDS is mainly used for catalyst sulfiding and coking control, DMS is typically found in gas odorant blends, thanks to its distinctive smell and volatility. To learn more about Arkema’s expertise in gas odorization, visit our Gas Odorant Solutions page.
What is DMDS injection and how is it performed during refinery operations?
DMDS injection is a key step in refinery and steam cracking operations to activate hydrotreatment catalysts or prevent coking. It involves the controlled introduction of DMDS into the process stream, where it decomposes into hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) under heat. The H₂S then reacts with metal oxides on catalyst surfaces to form active metal sulfides. Arkema provides guidance and technical support to ensure safe and efficient injection conditions tailored to each customer’s process.
How does DMDS interact with metals during catalyst sulfiding?
Arkema’s DMDS Evolution® E2 ensures a thorough sulfiding of metal oxides on catalyst surfaces, producing a high concentration of active sulfur species critical for reaction efficiency. Upon thermal decomposition, DMDS generates hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and methane (CH₄). The H₂S reacts directly with metal oxides to form metal sulfides, a key step in preparing catalysts for operation. Unlike some other sulfiding agents, DMDS minimizes coke formation and unwanted by-products, preserving catalyst integrity and prolonging its activity.
